BOOK LAUNCH: 29.06.23 H18.30 RUN-UP + GRASSO 06
Run-up collects the work developed by Grasso magazine throughout its first five issues, from 2016 to date. Juxtaposing the rhythmic sequence of a pole vault with excerpts from the magazine’s archive, this large-format publication aims to present the challenging visual research carried out by Grasso and to acknowledge exercise as a chance to reach higher by relying only on the possibilities of one’s body.
On this occasion, Grasso will launch its 6 th issue. The issue features a contribution by the Japanese mangaka Baron Yoshimoto, one the most important leading figures of the Gekiga movement which spread between the ‘60s and ‘70s in Japan.
Grasso is a project by Giuseppe Gabellone and Diego Perrone, a review where everything fits into a three-by-two-meter space. Six square meters of ideas, images, and stories that two artists have chosen to print on a surface that requires a commitment, an effort, to be seen and understood: to stretch out on it, to hang onto it, to climb on it. Grasso is nature, life, shelter, and freedom. It’s not cynicism, it’s whimsy.

The work is progressing, but at the moment it is mainly François who is taking care of it. The interview was done in September, it was transcribed by Michael in October and from then on François is editing it. I heard from him ten days ago and he said he needs a little more time.
Even if we're late, it's not a problem. Issue 4 will be ready in early 2020. I'll get in touch with François again after Christmas to find out where he's at.

Their transportation had to be organized, the models hired: Elena, Gilles; the photographers: Pierre Joly and Véra Cardot, the cameraman, the artist Alex Kosta as the fireman, and some assistants for the handling.
The setting in that industrial warehouse was surreal; the cold, the water and the noise of the flame-thrower which Yves manipulated with apparent ease even though it weighed over eighty pounds.
Seeing these photographs again, I seem all huddled up in a corner where I sat, four or five months pregnant. The atmosphere was tense: we were all aware that something of historical importance was happening.
Nevertheless, nothing was left to chance. Yves was working methodically; his concentration was impressive, almost painful, on the edge of rupturing: we were all fascinated.
He went from panel to panel, positioning the girls differently for each one, imagining choreographies and settings beyond our understanding, as obviously a wet body does not leave any visible traces until it is revealed by the magic of fire - just like the image which suddenly appears in the photographer’s lab, except that here no cheating was possible. Looking at the short film and the many pictures which document this event, one becomes conscious of the sheer physical feat that the creation of these works represents.

Rauschenberg worked in a variety of media, including print, assemblage, and performance, often juxtaposing seemingly unrelated objects drawn from everyday life. To create this print, he collaged an unexpected assortment of images, including a photographic reproduction of a painting by the eighteenth-century Venetian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, at bottom right, and of a baseball player, seen on the left, culled from an old printing plate discarded by the New York Times. The images are connected by painterly swaths of printer ink, reminiscent of the gestural brushstrokes of Abstract Expressionism. Rauschenberg produced his composition on a lithographic stone, which cracked during the printing process. Rather than abandon the broken stone, he embraced the chance happening by printing the lithograph with the fracture. In addition, he placed the chips of the broken stone at the base of the crack, rendering the defect a central feature of the print.

Un ponte che si volta! Non mi ero ancora voltato che già precipitavo e già ero straziato e infilzato sui sassi aguzzi che mi avevano sempre fissato così pacifici dall’acqua impetuosa.

Quello venne, mi percosse con la punta ferrata del bastone, sollevò con essa le mie falde e me le aggiustò addosso. Infilò la punta nei miei capelli folti e ve la lasciò a lungo, probabilmente guardandosi ansiosamente intorno. Ma poi – stavo appunto seguendolo nel sogno per monti e valli – mi balzò in mezzo al corpo a piedi pari. Rabbrividii per un dolore lancinante, ignaro di tutto. Chi era? Un bambino? Un sogno? Un bandito? Un suicida? Un tentatore? Un distruttore? E mi girai per vederlo.

Una volta, era verso sera – la prima? la millesima? non so – i miei pensieri erano sempre confusi e giravano in tondo. Verso sera, d’estate, il torrente scrosciava più buio, udii un passo d’uomo. A me, a me! Stenditi, ponte, mettiti in posizione, trave senza spalletta, reggi colui che ti è affidato. Pareggia insensibilmente il suo passo incerto, ma se vacilla, fatti conoscere e come una divinità montana scaglialo a terra.

In fondo rumoreggiava il gelido torrente popolato di trote. Nessun turista si smarriva fino a quelle impervie altezze, il ponte non era ancora registrato nelle carte topografiche. Così me ne stavo e aspettavo. Dovevo aspettare. Un ponte, una volta costruito, non può ceesare di essere ponte senza precipitare.

Dick Fosbury revolutionised the high jump
The 1968 Mexico City Olympics marked the international debut of Dick Fosbury and his celebrated "Fosbury flop," which would soon revolutionize high-jumping.
At the time, jumpers took off from their inside foot and swung their outside foot up and over the bar. Fosbury's technique began by racing up to the bar at great speed and taking off from his right (or outside) foot.
The he twisted his body so that he went over the bar head first with his back to the bar. While the coaches of the world shook their heads in disbelief, the Mexico City audience was absolutely captivated by Fosbury and shouted, "Olé" as he cleared the bar.
Fosbury cleared every height through 2.22 metres without a miss and then achieved a personal record of 2.24 metres to win the gold medal.
By 1980, 13 of the 16 Olympic finalists were using the Fosbury flop. It has since been shown that, unbeknownst to Fosbury, the first person to use the flop technique was actually a jumper from Montana named Bruce Quande, who was photographed flopping over a bar in 1963.

Continuous Project Altered Daily, 1969, is the furthest extreme of these ideas. At the time of this work’s exhibition at Castelli Warehouse the gallery was kept open to the public for two hours per day, and visitors could see Robert Morris creating the artwork. Morris kept a daily diary at home of what he had done and where the work seemed to be heading. At some point he brought tables, then dirt, into the gallery. He questioned everything. After a few days he realized it was a good idea to take photos of the work at the end of every day, in order to see where he had left off. The next day a photographer came to take a photo, and on the day after that Morris hung the photo on the wall of the gallery as a reference point. On the last day of the show he disassembled everything and used a tape recorder to register the sounds of the disassembly.
